Some weeks are just crazy busy. I’m sure you can relate.
We both have slightly different schedules. I typically work 8:30 – 5:30, head either to Timed Exercise or the gym to run after work. Adam works 7 – 5:30 (craziness!!). On Monday/Wednesday’s he goes to the gym after work to run as well. On Tuesday/Thursdays, he heads home because his Krav class (self defense extreme) isn’t until 7:15 pm.
With schedules like that, we found we didn’t always zig and zag in the right direction, especially with planning dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Adam doesn’t really have time before his class to make dinner, and I don’t get home from the gym before he leaves.
Knowing this, We started spending an hour or two on Sundays to prepare meals for the week that could easily be reheated (and still taste great). I thought I would chronicle some of the meals we’ve made in advance that were successful and maybe even some of the ones that weren’t.
We also take turns planning the weekly meals, which is nice. Adam gets even weeks, and I get the odd weeks “because I’m odd”. An Even or an Odd week is classified by the date that falls on Sunday of that week. If the date on Sunday is like March 2, 4, 6, 10… it’s an even week. If it’s March 3, 5, 13, 25… it’s an odd week. This actually helps prevent one of us from getting over burdened with meal planning. Plus, if one of us makes a not-so-great meal, it’s a challenge for the person next week to ‘one up’ that meal. I also may have a habit of making something 3 weeks in a row if it’s easy and tasty (Hello, pulled pork! I love you.. or did before I had it for 3 weeks straight…). Swapping weeks prevents that craziness from happening (which I’m prone to doing once I find something I really like…).
I’ve also started tinkering around the idea of “Once a Month Cooking” but I still think that might be a bit too extreme. It’s hard enough to plan a week out let alone 4 weeks! I am really interested in make-ahead meals that are easily frozen, so if you know of anything like that – please send them my way!
One thing to note, a lot of my recipes here will be “paleo-esk” as that’s how we try to eat during the week and at home. Some of the recipes may need a few mods if you’re a more strict Paleo as well. I eat cheese. I eat dairy. I’m NOT 100% Paleo, so from time to time I will make something that’s not Paleo because it just looks darn good. (and let’s just not ask what I eat when we go out to eat…)
I should also add, I’m constantly learning. As a result I end up doing a lot of “omg I didn’t know that!” and “ugh. That’s bad? I’ve been eating that for [insert: days, weeks, months, years]”. So frustrating. So god forbid I post something here that really is ridiculous, feel free to comment and post good reasoning (maybe a link to a legit resource?), because I am constantly evolving and learning every single day.
So on this page, I’ll chronicle our successes (& failures) as we tackle this new way of meal planning.
